The reach of that and other images of the “umbrella revolution” underscores the power of social media in political protests, even in a place such as Hong Kong, which is officially ruled by China — a country with one of the most sophisticated cyber-control units in the world.


Much to China’s displeasure, the Hong Kong protests have exploded on social media in the past several days as the story of the city’s fight for greater democratic freedoms unfolds for the world in a series of tweets and images. From Sept. 26 to 30, there have been more than 1.3 million tweets about the protests, according to data from Twitter.
