Path Talk lets you text businesses questions | News | Softonic

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/path-talk-lets-you-text-businesses-questions-news-softonic/

Social network Path updated its Path Talk app today with the ability to text businesses. Powered by TalkTo, a company Path bought back in June, the service lets you ask businesses questions via text and you’ll receive an answer within ten minutes. It’s like having a personal assistant.

The way Path Talk connects you to businesses is delightfully old school. You look up a business under the Places tab in the app and type in your question. A human will then look up the information for you by calling or searching the internet and return the answer to you within five to ten minutes.

Hong Kong (CNN) — Umbrellas, yellow ribbons, numbered codewords and tangles of phone cords: these are the distinctive sights of the dramatic protest unfolding beneath Hong Kong’s spectacular skyline.

Here are some of the defining images to have emerged from the days of pro-democracy protest that have rocked the semi-autonomous Chinese territory, and the reasons behind them.

After Hong Kong, Instagram Isn’t Just for Brunch Photos

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/after-hong-kong-instagram-isnt-just-for-brunch-photos/

As social networks go, Instagram has never had a particularly serious reputation. It’s the place for posed outfit selfies and brunch close-ups, not hard news and serious acts of political protest. That’s for Twitter — the network that rose to prominence during the Arab Spring and took a central role in dozens of subsequent geopolitical skirmishes — and Facebook, where it’s still possible to find substantive conversation about world events if you look between the baby photos.

Taylor Swift Shows Her Social Media Savvy with New Picture! – Air Herald

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/taylor-swift-shows-her-social-media-savvy-with-new-picture-air-herald/

Taylor Swift has been on a roll lately, this time, she has been spotted posting a picture of herself in a shirt that is about an obscure joke that’s been running around the Tumblr social network for a while now. It’s a picture of herself in a shirt that says “no its Becky.”

The shirt is a callback to a joke on Tumblr where a user posted a picture of Taylor Swift claiming it to be a photo of her friend and said no it’s Becky when another user said the photo was really of Taylor Swift. It’s not the first time Swift has been active on social media. She has been seen posting long memos to people on Instagram numerous times.

The Social Media Advertising Beginner’s Guide for Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-social-media-advertising-beginners-guide-for-twitter-facebook-and-linkedin/

When it comes to planning where to spend your marketing budget effectively, advertising on social media is one of the most sound investments you can make.

I often speak to marketers who are just getting started with online advertising and I offer the same advice at the start of each call. Advertising is complex, and it is never a set it and forget it process. Advertising requires testing and checking, and it requires a touch on all forms of advertising to truly see what is effective. In addition to display advertising with our networks, I suggest giving social a try.

In fact, social media recently became the most effective digital advertising channel for driving impressions, clicks, and conversions. These days, businesses are allocating on average 28% of their spend towards it.

Moko targets the evolution of the social network with micro social communities, says Northland Capital Markets

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/moko-targets-the-evolution-of-the-social-network-with-micro-social-communities-says-northland-capital-markets/

Moko Social Media (NASDAQ:MOKO) shares rose today after analysts at Northland Capital Markets initiated coverage on the mobile app company with an outperform rating and a price target that is almost double its current value, citing the highly-tailored nature of Moko’s business strategy.

The company, which was founded in 2004 and initially started in Australia, targets micro-social commuinities through its mobile applications, of which it expects to have launched six by January.

These micro-social communities are the evolution of the social network, wrote Northland analyst Darren Aftahi in his research report released Tuesday.

While Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus account for $2.1 billion plus of global social networking users, they are limited in scope in terms of addressing large sub-segmented social communities that share a common interest with the need to communicate with each other, he said.

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/staff-on-social-network-sites-for-two-hours-a-day-independent-ie/

A report has found that workers waste up to two hours a day checking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

“Employers are putting protocols and procedures in place to stop this and it’s becoming more and more common that they’re written into contracts of employment,” said Mark Fielding, CEO of the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ISME).

The employment market report was carried out by recruitment firm Cpl Resources, which also found that 50pc of employers allow their workers to have unlimited social media access.

“Some businesses are able to monitor what’s happening on a PC and what the traffic is,” said Mr Fielding.

However, the problem is that employees are now able to use their own smartphones in the office.

How to dig up dirt online

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-to-dig-up-dirt-online/

We all do it. You meet someone casually or professionally. After the exchange of pleasantries, you are compelled to bring out your inner Sherlock Holmes.

Hopping online, you are ready to validate or discredit this person. The problem is you need to use the right sites or else you’ll be duped, scammed or worse.

People search sites

If you search the Internet using only a person’s name, you’re going to eventually end up at a people search site like PeekYou, Spokeo, White Pages Neighbors or any of the other few dozen around.

These sites pull publicly available information about a person into one spot. You can find a person’s age, what social media accounts they have, where they live now, where they’ve lived in the past, their relatives’ names and quite a bit more.

How To Write A Networking Email That Isn't Annoying

While social networking is a strongly required asset to any business, face-to-face introductions are still just as high on the list. Hence, when being a part of or running a business and looking for prospects, networking events are a must-have in every daily agenda.

However, the question that remains is how to become a new connection and not someone a person met that one time. The answer: A strong follow up email that separates you from the other business cards on your new friend’s desk. But before hitting the “send” button, there are three things your email should include to make sure you really separate yourself from the herd:

An increase in social media use leads to more political participation by young people, with Facebook being the most effective channel, a new study has found.

The study surveyed 3,600 young people, aged between 16-29 years, across Australia, the UK and the US, 90 percent of whom use Facebook as opposed to Twitter use which was on average 50 percent.

And 65 percent of the Australian participants in the survey also highlighted that Facebook is where they first hear about news and major events, rather than traditional news outlets such as print and television news programmes.

Why Hong Kong Protesters are Using Firechat for Peer-to-Peer Communications on Their Mobiles

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/why-hong-kong-protesters-are-using-firechat-for-peer-to-peer-communications-on-their-mobiles/

Protesters in Hong Kong are using WhatsApp, Twitter and any number of messaging and social media services to communicate and coordinate their activities as tensions with local Chinese authorities intensify. But one app in particular is getting more attention than usual: FireChat.

The messaging app created by Open Garden can send and receive messages without an internet connection. It uses peer-to-peer Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct connections to link to other nearby FireChat-enabled devices. If you get enough of those devices in the same area, the result is a massive mesh network in which every handset can message every other handset in daisy-chain fashion – without ever sending a packet over an internet router.

Australia’s marketers will increase their spending on social media advertising by 24 per cent each year over the next five years, taking total spend in 2019 to $706 million, claims a new report.

The increase is slightly ahead of the Asia Pacific growth rate of 21.6 per cent, according to research firm Forrester which said the pace of growth across the region was slower than expected.

The figures were revealed in a social media advertising spending forecast covering Australia, China, India, Japan and South Korea. Forrester found Australian marketers will spend $241m on social channels in 2014, rising to $322m next year, $410m in 2016, $502m in 2017, $601m in 2018 and $706m in 2019.

Collectively, the five APAC nations will spend $2.17 billion on social marketing this year, rising to $5.8b by 2019, with India seeing the fastest annual compound growth rate of 51.5 per cent to $1b.

Beijing Blocks Reports on Hong Kong Democracy Movement

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/beijing-blocks-reports-on-hong-kong-democracy-movement/

Chinese officials moved quickly Monday to control news reports of the pro-democracy demonstrations that began in Hong Kong over the weekend and by Sunday night had turned into the largest street clashes in decades between civilians and the territory’s police force.

A directive from the central propaganda department in Beijing ordered websites to delete any mention of the unrest. The mainland news websites that did discuss the protests mostly posted a short article from Xinhua, the state news agency, that gave few details of what was unfolding down south. Some sites published editorial essays from Global Times, a state-run populist newspaper, taking a typically hard-line stand.

China blocks Instagram, 'tear gas' searches amid Hong Kong protests

But on Sunday, users in China began reporting that the product had been blocked. From Beijing, the app was no longer loading new posts.

Advertisers face social media backlash : News from warc.com

NEW YORK: Even as Facebook announced the launch of a new ad platform, Atlas, which it claims will deliver ‘people-based marketing’, a backlash appears to be under way with a new ad-free social network attracting 30,000 new user requests every hour.

A Facebook blog post said that marketers using Atlas would be able to “easily solve the cross-device problem through targeting, serving and measuring across devices”, while at the same time connecting online campaigns to actual offline sales.

Omnicom, the agency holding company, has already signed up to an agency-wide ad-serving and measurement partnership and plans to jointly develop integrations to enable more automated capabilities for its clients, including Pepsi and Intel which are among the first testing the new platform.

Fairfax case shows dangers of Facebook journalism: social media users beware

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/fairfax-case-shows-dangers-of-facebook-journalism-social-media-users-beware/

Australians’ love of social media, which includes 11.3 million Facebook users, has been a haven for social networking companies, advertisers, and increasingly journalists. But Fairfax’s recent publication of a photo of a young man misidentified as Numan Haider shows how important it is to protect the way your data is used.

The shooting of Haider, who allegedly stabbed two police officers in Endeavour Hills in Victoria, was widely reported by all media outlets. In the 24/7 world of print and online media, being first with information is key. And so Fairfax Media published photos of this man on its websites and on the front pages of The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Canberra Times very soon after the incident occurred.
