TOKYO: Japan self-censors images, words linked to hostage crisis | Celebrities | CentreDaily.com

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/tokyo-japan-self-censors-images-words-linked-to-hostage-crisis-celebrities-centredaily-com/

TOKYO — Images or mentions of knives, ransom or blood — or anything else that can be seen alluding to the hostage crisis involving two Japanese in Syria — have been omitted. Some anime and other entertainment programs are altering, canceling or postponing episodes violating those sensitivities — typical of the kind of self-restraint shown here to avoid controversy.

‘It’s like running a marathon barefoot’: the story of a startup in Nepal

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/its-like-running-a-marathon-barefoot-the-story-of-a-startup-in-nepal/

Building a social network from Nepal is not easy. But entrepreneurs are like children; curious and stubborn. They do exactly what they are told not to do. While starting 11Beep last year, most people I talked to said, “What you are trying to do is impossible.” The more I got those responses the more curious I became about why it was so hard to build a social network from Nepal?

In the summer of 2009, thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protest what was almost certainly a rigged presidential election. The protests were quickly dubbed the “Twitter Revolution,” because protestors were able to use the well-known social network to communicate with one another and with the world. Facebook Challenging YouTube As Place to Watch Super Bowl Ads

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/facebook-challenging-youtube-as-place-to-watch-super-bowl-ads/

Over the past few years, YouTube has been the place to go to watch, share and comment on Super Bowl ads. But now Facebook is coming on strong.

The research firm iSpot.tv, which tracks ads on TV and the Web, found that as of Friday afternoon Super Bowl ads had been viewed 100 million times online, up from 69.2 million at this point last year.

But perhaps even more noteworthy is Facebook’s surge. The social network, which last year was essentially a non-factor in Super Bowl ad viewing online, now makes up 35% of the views iSpot.tv is tracking, according to the company’s chief executive, Sean Muller.

Le app per la gestione dei social network on the go

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/le-app-per-la-gestione-dei-social-network-on-the-go/

Steelers Fans Surprisingly Named ‘Most Profane’ On Social Media | RantSports

Pittsburgh Steelers fans will probably be the first to tell you: their passion for their beloved steel men knows no bounds, often crossing the line into outlandishness and profanity. Of course, what constitutes “passionate” for some might translate into “arrogant” and “classless” in the eyes of division rivals, doing little to fan the flames in an already-heated AFC North.

Being “On” a Social Network is Not the Same as Using It

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/being-on-a-social-network-is-not-the-same-as-using-it/

It is highly likely that you have a profile on at least one social network. You probably have a profile on at least one of Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+. You may also have a Twitter account and maybe an account with Instagram. Indeed, most people have more than one social network profile.

But there is a world of difference between having a social network profile and using that social network.

Whenever I run a workshop for business leaders I ask “are you on LinkedIn?” These days, everyone raises their hand. “Excellent news,” I say, “that means everyone here is on the main business network. So how many of you have used LinkedIn during the past seven days?”

3 Ways Social Network Use Can Be Positive at Work

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/3-ways-social-network-use-can-be-positive-at-work/

It is common for people to think that social network use in the office is wrong because it will distract employees from their duties. While this can be true in some cases, there are some situations where they can actually be (very) positive for the work’s journey and even bring improved results.

Some social networks are actually targeting the business world with their services, but this article will focus on different aspects where they can be positive for employees (and employers). Let’s look at some of the ways through which social network use can be positive at work:

Pinterest has added new search results for men that highlight more manly content. The new feature is an attempt by one of the few social networks used mostly by women to lure men to the site.

The site has introduced a new feature, called Guided Search, that will customise search results according to users’ interests. That is thought mostly to be aimed at helping men get on the site, and avoid them seeing information pinned by and tailored for women.

Mums post breastfeeding selfies in Facebook protest

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/mums-post-breastfeeding-selfies-in-facebook-protest/

Dozens of mums have taken to Facebook to post their breastfeeding selfies, after one mother’s photo was reported for nudity violations.

Mum-of-two Kaya Wright, 32, posted a picture of her nursing her 16-month-old son Kayden in the bath on a closed breastfeeding group on the social network.

But the 32-year-old said that she received a notification from Facebook saying that they were ‘reviewing’ the image she shared with Liverpool Community BAMBIS.

It comes just days after breastfeeding mothers were outraged after being banned from feeding their children – at a breastfeeding conference.

Kaya, who works as a nurse, told the Liverpool Echo: “At first I thought it was a joke. Facebook said the image had been reported for nudity but you really couldn’t see anything. Then I was a bit disappointed at the thought that someone in the group had reported the image.

The increased popularity of social media, for business as well as personal use, has opened up a new avenue of attack for cyber criminals.

Risk management company ZeroFOX has produced a list of the top social media attacks to look out for this year.

These include impersonations of businesses and executives using fake accounts. These can be used to send phishing messages, launch social engineering attacks or to damage the reputation of those targeted.

How to use IFTTT to win at social media - CNET

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-to-use-ifttt-to-win-at-social-media-cnet/

The secret to winning at social media is being, or at least appearing to be, constantly present. As in, never sleeping, never eating (unless you’re Instagramming that food , I suppose), never taking a bad selfie, and never doing anything except Tweeting every second of your life.

The easiest way to cultivate a flawless online presence is to hire someone else to do it for you. But if you’re not a Kardashian, you probably don’t have the funds to pay a PR person, so instead there’s IFTTT — a handy little automation tool that can help you stay on top of the eight different social networks you manage on a daily basis.

For some reason, when we talk about the “emo revival” we only talk about a very specific time and sound. We talk about American Football, Mineral, Braid, and all related Midwestern musicians of the 90s who inspired another wave of brooding, twinkle-bands that would roll back into popularity in the 2010s. For some reason, we don’t often address the fact that, between those two time periods, the 00s happened.

As well as being the decade in which every music video editor discovered contrast levels and went to town with them, the 00s were responsible for launching a melodramatic fusion of elements taken from midwestern emo, hardcore punk, and pop to create emo 2.0

Former oil exec: $5-a-gallon gas on the way

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/former-oil-exec-5-a-gallon-gas-on-the-way/

John Hofmeister attracted national attention in 2010 when he predicted that average U.S. gasoline prices would soar to $5 a gallon in 2012, thanks to rising crude oil prices. His forecast fell short, as the cost of filling up flirted with $4 in 2012, but never went higher.

Now, with national gasoline prices currently averaging $2.05 a gallon, their lowest level since early 2009, the former president of Shell Oil 06is issuing another warning, telling motorists that their joy ride may end sooner than they think.

“The next round of high prices is likely to start later this year, as crude rebounds to the $80s and $90s, perhaps pushing to the $100 level by late in the year or early next,” Hofmeister told me the other day after a trip to Calgary, where he was promoting natural gas as a transportation fuel.

New Illinois cyber bully law lets teachers access students' social media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/%e2%80%8bnew-illinois-cyber-bully-law-lets-teachers-access-students-social-media/

Students in the state of Illinois can now be legally compelled to give their teachers access to their social media accounts through a new law that’s intended to crack down on cyber bullying, but it raises concerns about personal privacy.

The law — signed by then-Governor Pat Quinn in August and officially added to the books on January 1 — is reportedly now making waves after letters were sent to the parents of students last week outlining the rules.

According to school and state officials, the new cyber bullying legislation gives educators the ability to access the social media accounts of their students, if it’s pertinent to preventing any hostile online behavior, including cyber bullying outside the classroom and school hours.

Facebook is preparing a version of its site for the workplace designed, it’s suggested, to compete directly with LinkedIn. This is puzzling at first glance, since Facebook at Work seems geared toward letting people connect and collaborate with colleagues and peers at their current jobs, while LinkedIn is focused more on building professional connections with people outside the firm.

10 Social Networks Aimed at Improving Enterprise Collaboration

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/10-social-networks-aimed-at-improving-enterprise-collaboration/

Historically, social networks were designed for consumers to keep in touch with friends or find out what family members are doing. Friendster and MySpace were once dominant in social networking, but are now distant memories. Today, the king of social networking is Facebook, followed by Twitter, Google+ and many others, and social networking is alive and well. Perhaps that’s why social networking is increasingly making its presence felt in the enterprise. On Jan. 14, Facebook launched a limited release of its enterprise social networking service,

Three Ways to Handle Social Media Stress

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/three-ways-to-handle-social-media-stress/

No matter what we do for a living, most of us have busy days and the ease of technology has not served to be as helpful as we may have hoped. Rather than make the machinations of life easier, all these wonderful time savers makes us more aware of the fleetingness of time. What was once something we could “play with” is now something that stresses people out.

Buyers of Sold-Out Charlie Hebdo Show Off Cover on Social Media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/buyers-of-sold-out-charlie-hebdo-show-off-cover-on-social-media/

Charlie Hebdo’s editors first thought 1 million copies would be enough. For a satirical newspaper that used to sell fewer than 60,000 copies before the Jan. 7 attack on its office left 12 dead, including eight of its journalists, the number seemed extraordinary.

But faced with an unprecedented demand in France and across the world, Charlie Hebdo’s print order was bumped to 3 million, then 5 million today.

Think before you post vehicle accidents on Social Media; be sensitive

LEWISTON, ID – Law enforcement officers have to deal with tough situations every day, including having to notify family members that a loved one has died in an accident or from a crime.

One thing that makes their job more difficult, is when family members learn of a death first, from social media.

Earlier this month a woman saw a post of Facebook about an accident her husband was involved in on Highway-12.

10 Social Media Marketing Trends to Watch Out for in 2015 (Infographic)

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/10-social-media-marketing-trends-to-watch-out-for-in-2015-infographic/

It was a little over five years ago when MySpace was still popular and Facebook just rolled out the now iconic “Like” button. Since then, social media grew into a huge worldwide phenomena with more than 1,730,000,000 users uploading 20 thousand pictures on Tumblr, 104 thousand images on snapchat and 2.46 million posts on Facebook every minute.

These figures are expected to grow substantially next year, with a projected 2.44 billion users networking with friends and family on their favorite social networks. Such figures attest to how influential social media can be in how people communicate and engage with others online, as well as how they do business and commerce.

When sport and social media collide - Telegraph

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/when-sport-and-social-media-collide-telegraph/

Manchester United had to fire European scout Torben Aakjaer recently after allegations that the Dane posted racial anti-immigration slurs to Facebook.

If he did post the comments, and his sacking by the club would indicate that he probably did, then Mr Aakjaer has clearly done a very stupid thing – but he is certainly not the first.

The growth of social media use in football has lead to a directly proportional increase in clubs’ press officers tearing their hair out in exasperation. Here I’ve taken a look back at some of the worst offenders

Social Media and the Cost of Caring

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-media-and-the-cost-of-caring/

For generations, commentators have worried about the impact of technology on people’s stress. Trains and industrial machinery were seen as noisy disruptors of pastoral village life that put people on edge. Telephones interrupted quiet times in homes. Watches and clocks added to the de-humanizing time pressures on factory workers to be productive. Radio and television were organized around the advertising that enabled modern consumer culture and heightened people’s status anxieties.

Charlie Sheen creates social media firestorm after showing up at Lambeau; going out in Howard

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/charlie-sheen-creates-social-media-firestorm-after-showing-up-at-lambeau-going-out-in-howard/

GREEN BAY (WITI) — From the Jonas Brothers, to country star Brad Paisley, there were plenty of celebrities at Lambeau Field Sunday, January 11th as the Packers declared victory over the Dallas Cowboys. However, if social media is any sort of a barometer, none made an impression on Green Bay like Charlie Sheen.

Just after Charlie Sheen was spotted cheering for the Packers at Lambeau Field, pictures and posts started hitting social media, showing the actor out and about in Howard, Wisconsin.

News Wrap: Islamic State supporters hack U.S. military social media accounts | PBS NewsHour

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/news-wrap-islamic-state-supporters-hack-u-s-military-social-media-accounts-pbs-newshour/

GWEN IFILL: The U.S. Central Command’s social media Web sites were hacked today. The hackers called themselves a cyber-caliphate and said they acted on behalf of Islamic State militants.

Threats posted on CENTCOM’s Twitter feed included a warning that said — quote — “American soldiers, we are coming. Watch your back.”

Other postings showed soldiers at work and even listed names and phone numbers of military personnel. And there were scenarios for conflict with North Korea and China, but it appeared that none of the material is classified.

Brian Fung of The Washington Post has followed the story all day.

Survey finds 14% of employees spend over an hour on social media at work

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/survey-finds-14-of-employees-spend-over-an-hour-on-social-media-at-work/

One in seven employees spend more than an hour on social media during work hours, according to a new survey by recruitment firm CPL.

CPL’s Employment Market Monitor for the fourth quarter 2014 found 14 per cent of employees use social media for more than one hour each day.

The survey also found that 50 per cent of people would reject a job offer if the interview process was too long or took more than three interviews.

Location, insultingly low salary offers and negative social media commentary about employers were also factors in the jobseeker’s decision-making process.

The survey findings also show that 60 per cent of workers believe smoking breaks should be banned and that such breaks are unfair due to the amount of time smokers were away from their work duties.

Viral power: Social media can kill a business

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/viral-power-social-media-can-kill-a-business-2/

How valuable has social media become to the success — or failure — of South Jersey businesses?

“Very, very valuable,” according to Les Vail, CEO of the Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce.

So valuable that the chamber is hosting a forum later this month called “Blurred Lines: How One Post Can Change Your Life.”

Vail hopes the Jan. 28 seminar at Auletto Caterers in Almonesson will educate business owners to the value and the dangers of social media sites such as Facebook, Yelp and Instagram as more and more consumers take to those sites to offer their opinions and feedback.

“Social media is here to stay,” Vail added. “When it’s done right, and done with a plan, it’s a great marketing tool. And it’s affordable.

U.S. military social media accounts apparently hacked by Islamic State sympathizers

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/u-s-military-social-media-accounts-apparently-hacked-by-islamic-state-sympathizers/

Hackers claiming allegiance to the Islamic State took control of the social media accounts of the U.S. military’s Central Command on Monday, posting threatening messages and propaganda videos, along with some military documents.

The command’s Twitter and YouTube accounts were eventually taken offline, but not before a string of tweets and the release of military documents, some of which listed contact information for senior military personnel. A Centcom spokesman confirmed their accounts were “compromised,” and said later that the accounts have been taken offline while the incident is investigated more.

5 Cereals Twitter Users Are Desperate to Bring Back

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/5-cereals-twitter-users-are-desperate-to-bring-back/

When General Mills relaunched its sugary French Toast Crunch cereal on Friday after an eight-year hiatus, Twitter exploded with gratitude.

Ever since, the cereal has been consistently trending on Twitter. And the news is stirring up chatter about other breakfast treats worthy of a comeback.

It’s not the first time consumers have lobbied companies on social media to bring back old-school products. (That’s why Burger King started cooking up chicken fries again and Bobbi Brown re-released its Wine lipstick.) But people seem to have a nostalgic streak for cereal in particular—likely because of the muscle that packaged-good brands put into marketing them.

How do they use it?

What are they looking for in an app?

The case of teenagers and their thoughts on the world around them has long been a code just waiting to be cracked.

Plenty of people have tried to do so, and some have been more successful than others.

But who better to discuss what teenagers think of social media and technology than teenagers themselves?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/heres-how-a-real-teenager-uses-and-doesnt-use-social-media/

There’s a whole category of social-science fallacy that revolves around extrapolating from one or two cases, so we should be careful not to read too much into a recent Medium post by 19-year-old Andrew Watts about how he and his friends use various social-media platforms. That said, however, it’s still fascinating to look at how differently his age group approaches some of the services we older folks take for granted.
