To Tweet Or Not To Tweet That Is The Question

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/to-tweet-or-not-to-tweet-that-is-the-question/

Many small business owners undervalue the use of social media regarding it with some suspicion as purely a self – promotional tool for celebrities or a communication platform for teenagers.

Social media is here to stay and is an excellent and cost effective way to promote your business and best of all it’s free! It’s never been easier to get your brand out there, promote your products and engage directly with your customers. Ignore it at your peril!

Make the Most of Your Time: Subcontract Social Media Management

Time goes by quickly when you’re spending it on social media. On the other hand, no matter how much time you spend trying to manage your company’s social networks, the results may not be as good as you hoped for.

Time is an important factor in social networks – businesses do not like to spend much time on it, but expect that users will. Here are three reasons why social media management should be subcontracted, leading to better results and less frustrations and wasted time.

The Impact of Social Media on Body Image

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-impact-of-social-media-on-body-image/

A new study estimates that approximately a half million teens struggle with eating disorders or disordered eating. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating can cause serious physical problems and, at their most severe, can even be life-threatening. As we mark National Eating Disorders Awareness Week Feb. 22-28, we asked UConn Health’s child and adolescent psychologist Karen Steinberg-Gallucci about the impact social media may have and some tips on how to approach a friend or family member who may be suffering from an eating disorder.

Social networking turns to tales of cold and snow

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-networking-turns-to-tales-of-cold-and-snow/

Over the past week, social media feeds and Internet sites were filled with tales of fighting the winter blues.

With temperatures dropping below zero, meteorologists posted constant updates, parents shared school closing announcements and commuters took dashboard photos listing temperatures as low as minus 17 degrees. When snow and ice accumulated over the weekend, self-proclaimed traffic reporters posted Facebook warnings to stay off the roads.

Others admitted to checking warm-weather vacation websites. Friends living on the West Coast mocked those in the East. “I live in Los Angeles, I am coping just fine!” former Pittsburgher Michael McNeirney said

How to Get Paid for Your Social Media Posts

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-to-get-paid-for-your-social-media-posts/

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are profiting off your posts.

We’re talking about raking in hundreds of millions of dollars in ad revenue every time you share your selfies, upload a video, or update your status.

Last quarter, Facebook reported ad revenue of $3.6 billion, and that’s 53 percent more than just one year ago. According to internet analyst Colin Sebastian, “The vast majority of their $2.2 billion operating income is from selling ads targeted to user news feeds.”

Imagine if you could share in some of that money making madness.

A new social media upstart called Tsu is trying to do just that. Tsu gives 90 percent of its revenue back to its users.

The annual Social Journalism Study, conducted by Canterbury Christ Church University and Cision, has highlighted that while the majority of UK journalists now use social media for their work, they actually spend less time using the technology than they have in the last two years.

Journalists claimed in the survey that the technology had changed the meaning of their work, as well as the way that they approached it. However, for the first time in five years there was a significant expression of concern about cyber security, as well as social media’s threat to professional values.

Sean Penn and others rile up social media at the Oscars - CNN.com

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/sean-penn-and-others-rile-up-social-media-at-the-oscars-cnn-com/

(CNN)Between light-hearted moments like Benedict Cumberbatch taking a swig from a hip flask and Neil Patrick Harris parading on stage in his underwear, it was all about activism and controversial topics at the 87th Academy Awards.

A broad range of issues, from immigration to suicide to Alzheimer’s disease to wage inequality, took center stage.

Sean Penn rubbed many the wrong way when he joked “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?” as he presented Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu the best picture award for “Birdman.”

Iñarritu seemed unperturbed and devoted the Oscar win to his fellow Mexicans, saying, “I just pray they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones that came before and built this incredible, immigrant nation.”

In the press room, Iñarritu said of Penn’s joke, “I found it hilarious. Sean and I have that kind of brutal (relationship) where only true friendship can survive.”

Mostly, though, the night belonged to messages of empowerment.

After expressing the usual gratitude to cast and crew of Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood,” best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette took a moment at the end of her acceptance speech to call for equal pay for women.

“To every woman who gave birth to every taxpayer and citizen in this nation: We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality in the U.S.,” she said, causing an uproar in the room as well as on social media.

Despite Meryl Streep’s whooping approval, some viewers said the irony was not lost on them that Arquette’s speech was given at such a lavish affair. Others argued that although the message was important, it marginalized the LGBT and non-white communities.

Don’t have the stomach to be lectured by #PatriciaArquette about wage inequality. Her dress probably cost more than most make.
— Kathy Sheerin (@sheerinsanity) February 23, 2015

Reese Witherspoon, who was nominated for best actress for her role in “Wild,” advocated for the hashtag #AskHerMore, which encourages red carpet presenters to ask more thought-provoking questions instead of the usual appearance-driven ones like “Who are you wearing?”

Graham Moore gave an emotional speech after his win for best adapted screenplay for “The Imitation Game.”

“When I was 16 years old, I tried to kill myself because I felt weird and I felt different and I felt like I did not belong,” Moore said. “And now I’m standing here, and so I would like this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she’s weird or she’s different or she doesn’t fit in anywhere. Yes, you do. I promise you do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass this same message to the next person who comes along.”

The hashtag #StayWeird took off in the wake of Moore’s speech.

Resources for suicide awareness and prevention include the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and The Trevor Project.

And lastly, J.K. Simmons got preachy about a topic that hits close to home for many: The winner of best supporting actor for “Whiplash” encouraged viewers to #CallYourMom.

“And if I may, call your mom. Everybody — I’m told there’s like a billion people or so. Call your mom; call your dad. If you are lucky enough to have a parent or two alive on this planet, call them. Don’t text, don’t email,” he said.

So, have you called her yet?

Snapchat’s Safety Center wants to educate parents - SlashGear

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/snapchats-safety-center-wants-to-educate-parents-slashgear/

Snapchat is one of those big ironies of Internet history. It was originally designed to be safe and private due to the “ephemeral” nature of shared content. That, however, was used as a license to share revealing photos, which would eventually get leaked circulated to the public. Add to that more recent complaints about the company’s security practices, or lack of it, and you would understand why Snapchat is now trying to save its reputation with a Safety Center that informs parents and teachers what Snapchat is all about.

A recent study shows selfies are influencing a greater number of people to undergo cosmetic procedures, even plastic surgery.

We used to see ourselves in pictures only occasionally, but mobile technology has given us instant photo feedback and social networking has invited a new level of scrutiny.

The date on which the video was filmed is unknown, although it appeared on social media around February 19. If you need further evidence of social media’s omnipresent influence nowadays, take a gander at We Are Social’s “Digital Statshot 002″ report, which reveals that there are currently about 2 billion active social media accounts worldwide-equating to a whopping penetration of 28% of the planet’s population, with about roughly 1.6 billion of these accounts active via mobile. Social Location App FacesIn Pivots To Future Whereabouts

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-location-app-facesin-pivots-to-future-whereabouts/

Portugal Ventures-backed company Wizi knows a thing or two about social geolocation services, having made a business in recent years building Foursquare-like apps for carriers, including Telefonica and Vodafone. One example being Vodafone Radar — an app which it says garnered around half a million downloads.

But working with carriers, say co-founders Paulo Dimas and Jorge Medeira, is painstakingly slow compared to the pace of startup development — taking, for instance, a full two years to launch just one app with Telefonica in Brazil. (“It’s horrible” is their concise verdict on working with carriers).

How social media can make your small business go gangbusters

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-social-media-can-make-your-small-business-go-gangbusters/

Social media is constantly being touted for its brand-building power, and rightly so. But many small businesses fail to reap the expected benefits from their investments of time and money in social media, largely because they haven’t fully grasped the unwritten rule of social media marketing: It’s not which tools you use, it’s how you use them that spells the difference between profitable performance and lackluster results.

Like professional marketers, successful small business owners target their social media activities for maximum impact. While their competitors are adrift in a sea of tweets and blog posts

NEW YORK — When one of Ileaa Swift’s employees posted homophobic comments on Facebook, the reaction was quick.

“It posted around 1 in the morning. The next morning, when I got up, I had all these calls and emails and hate mail,” says Swift, owner of Swift Travel Deals in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Whether it’s comments about news events, long-held beliefs or a bad joke, an employee’s offensive posts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites can damage a company’s image and profits.

The U.S. wants to attack ISIS on social media, but it probably isn't going to work

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-u-s-wants-to-attack-isis-on-social-media-but-it-probably-isnt-going-to-work/

The U.S. has launched thousands of airstrikes against the group that calls itself the Islamic State since last August, blunting its momentum and turning the tide on its rapid advances on battlefields in Syria and Iraq.

But in a different campaign, one being waged on social media, the U.S. is months — perhaps years — behind. And it’s a big problem for a coalition looking to “degrade and ultimately destroy” ISIS, as President Barack Obama has said.

Coalition pledges $18m to combat extremist websites and social media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/coalition-pledges-18m-to-combat-extremist-websites-and-social-media/

Nearly $18m will be spent on shutting down websites and monitoring social media for terrorist propaganda, the attorney general, George Brandis, has announced.

Brandis said the Combating Terrorist Propaganda in Australia initiative will help to halt the spread of violent extremism.

Some of the $17.9m cost will go toward the funding of “civil society organisations to establish a counter-narrative to combat and contest terrorist narratives that have been mediated online”, Brandis said.

“We are monitoring social media for the purpose of identifying, and where appropriate, taking down terrorist propaganda just as we monitor social media for the purpose for identifying and taking down paedophilia,” Brandis said. “We must move beyond the notion that some people still have that the internet and social media are a lawless space. They are not.

Does the Islamic State post 90,000 social media messages each day?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/does-the-islamic-state-post-90000-social-media-messages-each-day/

The Islamic State group, or ISIS, has fused two things that until now were separated by centuries — medieval brutality and the hyperactive use of social media. And while tweeted images of beheadings and immolations draw the biggest headlines, the pro-ISIS propaganda stream is much broader, full of visions of a resurgent Islam seeking soldiers in its cause.

Former National Security Council staffer Hillary Mann Leverett focused on this part of the ISIS recruiting machine during a Feb. 17, 2015, interview on CNN’s New Day. Leverett said American military operations since the Iraq War have given ISIS plenty of material to exploit

A Social Media Mistake Is Not a Good Reason to Be Fired

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/a-social-media-mistake-is-not-a-good-reason-to-be-fired/

Jon Ronson’s forthcoming book, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, can’t reach front porches soon enough, assuming it resembles the adaptation published in The New York Times. The journalist and humorist revisits the stories of mostly obscure people who showed bad judgment (as every Internet user has done at one time or another) but were unlucky enough to become the focus of an angry digital mob. The nature of their transgressions varies. But in each case, the punishments arbitrarily urged or meted out by callous strangers on social media affected their lives for years, costing them jobs, causing them to flee from their homes, stressing their loved ones, and sending them into states of existential despair.

Social networking still in its infancy

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-networking-still-in-its-infancy/

Social networking is here to stay. In fact, it’s still in its infancy despite having created hundreds of billions of dollars in market valuations for social networking stocks from LinkedIn to Facebook to still-private Snapchat.

Here’s an interesting comparison of Facebook FB -0.10% versus Apple AAPL -0.10% versus Google GOOG -0.04% since Facebook first got above $70 a share back in late July. In the time since then, Apple’s up 21%, Facebook is flat while Google is down 11%.

I wrote a while ago on how FB’s been stuck in the $70s and it’s only been more of the same for Facebook shareholders since then

The problem with trends is that you need to be an early adopter in order to be an active participant and influencer. If you’re late to the game, you’re stuck playing with your Tamagotchi while everyone else is catching Pokémon—that is, you’re two steps behind. Social media trends are no different, except they evolve at an exponential rate with the changing tides of technology. Keeping up can be difficult, especially for content creators, but we have reviewed three trends in social media content writing that will get your 2015 started off right

Is Social Media a Waste of Time? | WIRED

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/is-social-media-a-waste-of-time-wired/

Whether you’re every other freelance blogger at your local coffee shop (latte in hand) or a small business owner struggling to keep the lights on, it’s certainly a question worth pondering. The answer to such a question, relayed to us by a faceless sea of “gurus,” “experts” and tech start-up superstars is a resounding “Of course not,” or at the very least, “Well, I guess it depends.”

Let’s cut to the chase. It’s hard to deny the notion that our social presence online has truly become an extension of ourselves off. Facebook’s new policy allowing for Internet “immortality” further cements this reality. Our existence offline is becoming less removed from our existence online, meaning that if we’re making connections and doing business in the “real world,” the same rules should apply on the web, right?
