FEMA seeks millions from NJ Sandy victims

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/fema-seeks-millions-from-nj-sandy-victims/

TOMS RIVER – When Catherine Tango opened the letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in late October, she began to panic.

Homeless after the storm flooded the Ortley Beach condominium she was renting, Tango, 61, relied on FEMA for assistance to pay her rent and living expenses at an apartment she rented in Howell. But the letter she received in late October demanded repayment of $15,500 — and threatened to garnish her monthly Social Security disability check if she doesn’t pay it back.

Giving Tuesday: nonprofits' answer to Black Friday, Cyber Monday

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/giving-tuesday-nonprofits-answer-to-black-friday-cyber-monday/

During the evening of Giving Tuesday this week, leaders of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh’s 2015 fundraising campaign will staff a phone bank and urge supporters to pledge gifts that could be matched from a $10,000 pool donated by campaign chair David Sufrin, a retired business executive from Squirrel Hill.

The nonprofit isn’t limiting its appeal to dollars, however.

It hopes people will embrace the volunteer spirit of the third annual Giving Tuesday earlier in the day by showing up to sort food and stock shelves at the Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry; serve lunch to seniors at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill; or help organize clothing at Thriftique, the National Council of Jewish Women’s consignment store in Swissvale

Heartland Brewery receives backlash for ‘racist’ slogan

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/heartland-brewery-receives-backlash-for-racist-slogan/

Heartland Brewery is drawing some bad buzz over a slogan that for many invokes slavery.

The boneheaded beerhouse’s Bavarian Black Lager promises customers will become “a slave to the flavor” — sparking a brouhaha among customers who believe the seasonal suds’ saying smacks of racism.

“It’s just wrong,” said one white patron as he stared up at the sign at the brewery chain’s Union Square location.

“It’s actually crazy,” added a 42-year-old man who would only identify himself as Ryan.

“There’s a better way to express what they’re trying to express without eliciting that mindset.”

The beer slogan’s racist interpretation wasn’t lost on Ryan’s father-in-law.

Supreme Court case tests the limits of free speech on Facebook and other social media - The Boston Globe

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/supreme-court-case-tests-the-limits-of-free-speech-on-facebook-and-other-social-media-the-boston-globe/

WASHINGTON — About a week after Tara Elonis persuaded a judge to issue a protective order against her estranged husband, Anthony, her soon-to-be ex had this to say:

‘‘Fold up your PFA [protection-from-abuse order] and put it in your pocket.

“Is it thick enough to stop a bullet?’’

Anthony Elonis didn’t deliver the message in person, by phone, or in a note. He posted it on his Facebook page, for all to see, in a prose style reminiscent of the violent, misogynistic lyrics of rap artists he admires.

In its first examination of the limits of free speech on social media, the Supreme Court on Monday will consider whether, as a jury concluded, the postings by Elonis constituted a ‘‘true threat’’ to his wife and others.

But the fact is that scientists have been using data collected from social media and publishing papers based on their findings. This means that what the scientists thought was an accurate estimation which could be published was actually a specific kind of bias based on incomplete information.

Facebook has over 1.3 billion people on the social network, but the amount of time spent on Facebook is less than ideal — at only 40 minutes per day — it drags behind other social services. One of the reasons for the low average user time may be the fact Facebook is blocked at work. Most companies block Facebook from being accessed, to stop time wasted on the social networking platform.

Early in his career, he, like most others studying addiction at the time, focussed on substance-abuse problems—cocaine and heroin addicts, alcoholics, and the like. Soon, however, he noticed patients with other problems that were more difficult to classify. There were, for example, the sufferers of trichotillomania, the inescapable urge to pull your hair until it falls out.

Social Networking vs. Social Advertising

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-networking-vs-social-advertising/

The vast digital realm allows brands and consumers to form personal connections with each other literally at the click of a button. When we as marketers evaluate platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn, we often think of product advertising. Let us not forget that the native title of these platforms: “social networks.” Not “social ad space” or “social sales megaphones.”

Overall responsiveness to social media ads remains low, with only a small share of consumers reporting that they’ve made a purchase directly as a result of seeing an ad. However, it is increasingly clear that social media plays a key role in the way that many consumers interact with brands, find out about products, and research products they’re considering purchasing.

The mass rape that Sudanese soldiers allegedly committed in a village in North Darfur more than three weeks ago continues to incite people worldwide to rally for the victims and denounce the crime on social media.

Calls for an independent inquiry into the allegations remain, after a doubtful UN-AU verification mission on 9 November, and the special prosecutor of Darfur’s investigations in the village.
