Digital Amnesia: Lying on Social Networking Can Cause Personality Disorders

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/digital-amnesia-lying-on-social-networking-can-cause-personality-disorders/

A new study found that two-thirds of Facebook users are lying on their profiles and are putting themselves at risk of “digital amnesia.”

Digital amnesia involves replacing one’s own memory with false events and living as if they were real.

In a new survey by social networking site Pencourage, more than 68 percent of the respondents admitted exaggerating or lying on their Facebook or Twitter posts. Ten percent of them showed symptoms of digital amnesia as they couldn’t recall what really happened in the past. The youngest users, aged between 18 and 24, of these social networking sites are the most vulnerable with 16 percent of them unable to recall the actual incidents.

Charlotte startup launches social network for ‘real life’ fun

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/charlotte-startup-launches-social-network-for-real-life-fun/

Charlotte startup founder Joshua Lineberger had a beef with social media websites: They simply weren’t social enough, he said.

On Tuesday, he unveiled his solution: Socialtopias, a mobile app and social networking site that helps users plan a night out with friends, chat with people in real time and claim deals from restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Surveys often reveal facts that are largely common sense, and this is certainly true of a study by the Pew Research Center – the findings being that the internet is seen as “very important” to workers.

Nearly half of the 1,066 people surveyed said internet, email and cell phones made them more productive, while just 7 per cent said the opposite was true.

So far, so predictable. But the same study also reveals that just 4 per cent of workers feel that social networking sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are “very important”.

Top 10 Social Network Blunders Of 2014 - InformationWeek

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/top-10-social-network-blunders-of-2014-informationweek/

Social networks had a big year in 2014: Facebook celebrated its 10th birthday, closed its third billion-dollar acquisition, and renewed its focus on user privacy with a number of updates and changes.

Twitter, though it struggled to meet investors’ expectations in the first half of the year, ramped up activity in the second half, launching new analytics, a buy button, and a handful of other improvements set to debut in 2015.

‘Monster Strike’ Gives Former Social Media Giant Mixi a Second Act

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/monster-strike-gives-former-social-media-giant-mixi-a-second-act/

TOKYO — It was a familiar trajectory for a social network like Facebook that did not happen to be Facebook: One moment there were tens of millions of users and a multibillion-dollar stock market valuation. The next, a plunge toward whatever-happened-to-it oblivion.

But the Japanese technology company Mixi, once the dominant social network in its consummately Internet-connected home market, is rewriting the ending to its story, thanks to a striking act of self-reinvention.

On Monday, Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby said the FBI has joined local and state law enforcement agencies as well as the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Marshals Service in the hunt for Chambers’ killer.

This week in social media, Facebook users discovered that an algorithmically-driven “look back” at the year is pretty accurate — maybe too depressingly accurate.

Meanwhile, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo got more pressure to step down from the helm of the troubled company, while rumor has it Foursquare and Twitter will partner to add more location features to tweets in 2015. Also, Facebook found out it has to face a privacy lawsuit over messages from two years ago.

Government uses social media to interact with residents

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/government-uses-social-media-to-interact-with-residents/

Governmental agencies in Southern Illinois are using Facebook to keep residents informed.

Murphysboro Mayor Will Stephens uses his own personal Facebook account to keep residents in the loop. He said the city also has a Facebook page for the same reason.

“I, as mayor, maintain a Facebook page and do my best to promote Murphysboro and inform the residents through it,” he said. “I often post about new businesses coming to town, boil water orders and discuss issues facing the city.”

He said his personal page is updated daily. Posts to the city’s Facebook page are less frequent, but are done at least once a week.

Marion also has a strong social media presence, said Information Technology Director Terrance Henry.

To judge by their posts on Facebook, they are having the time of their lives. But almost two-thirds of social-media users lie to ‘airbrush reality’ and make their lives seem more interesting than they are, according to a revealing new survey.

The findings have led psychologists to warn that some may succumb to ‘digital amnesia’, believing their own versions of events and forgetting what really happened.

By lying on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, users may ‘rewrite’ their memories. Nearly half of respondents claimed to feel paranoia, sadness and shame as a result of not being able to live up to their online image.

Is your social marketing strategy future-proof?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/is-your-social-marketing-strategy-future-proof/

Social networks have to make money — and they can’t do it by continuing to offer their audience engagement platforms to brands for free. So, with Facebook at the helm, they’re evolving into ad platforms, slowly chipping away at the number of fans a brand can reach without paying to sponsor its content. On top of that, there are 7x as many users on social media than there were just five years ago, and those users — both brands and individuals — are also creating and sharing record amounts of content. And as a result, news feeds are surging with more brands, people, and content than anyone could realistically consume.

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/five-things-great-brands-will-do-differently-on-social-media-in-2015/

Social media marketing came of age in 2014 with Facebook named advertising medium of the year and big brands doubling down on their paid media investment. Marketers have begun realising that these channels have huge potential to drive results when done right. It’s a good time to take stock and think about what brands could be doing even better going forward and here are five suggestions I think should shake up the industry a little in 2015.

Ukip tells members: ‘Don’t go on Twitter’

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/ukip-tells-members-dont-go-on-twitter/

Nigel Farage is cracking down on Ukip supporters’ social media activity after a series of scandals over racist comments. The party has changed its constitution to prevent unauthorised use of the Ukip logo by supporters, members and officials, while Ukip’s chairman has warned those tempted to join Twitter: “My advice: just don’t.”

The move follows hugely embarrassing revelations about the publicly stated views of a host of Ukip European and local election candidates.

In one of the more notorious episodes, William Henwood, a Ukip candidate in Enfield, was exposed by this newspaper for tweeting the suggestion that Lenny Henry, who had recently lamented the lack of ethnic-minority faces on television, should emigrate to a “black country” and does “not have to live with whites”.

An Extreme Case Of How Some People Use Social Media To Get Attention

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/an-extreme-case-of-how-some-people-use-social-media-to-get-attention/

Remember Me is a typical boy-cheats-on-girl story that turns into a surprising tale of someone so narcissistic that he would do anything to get attention. Add Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to the mix, and things get crazy fast. It’s exaggerated, yes, but I’m sure you know people like this online — and in real life too.

WARNING: The short contains a very strong scene at the end.

This fantastic short film by Jean-François Asselin is in French subtitled in English, but don’t let that stop you from watching it. You will be glad you did because it’s such a brutal critique of the narcissism that permeates all social media today.

A Facebook TV show? HLN teams with social-media giant on pilot | Boston Herald

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/a-facebook-tv-show-hln-teams-with-social-media-giant-on-pilot-boston-herald/

Facebook is trying its hand at TV, teaming with Time Warner’s HLN network to produce a pilot for a series that will use the popular social network to find and tell interesting stories.

“We don’t and they don’t want this to feel like ‘The Facebook Show,'” said Kari Kim, vice president of development at HLN, in an interview. “It’s really about the stories and how we are using their tools” to discover information and identify what’s happening around the world.

Executives at the network, which is part of CNN Worldwide, said initial details remain sketchy. The pilot will make it to air in the first half of 2015, said Lila King, HLN’s senior director of product strategy and partnerships, but the network remains uncertain so far as to what form the program will ultimately take.

Options ranging from a weekly format to a series of specials have all been discussed, said Kim. No hosts have been decided upon either.

Trending: Policy on social media backfires

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/trending-policy-on-social-media-backfires/

The small Tennessee town of South Pittsburg has a troll problem, at least according to city leaders.

South Pittsburg is home to some 3,000 people and, just like everyone else in America, they love their social media. But city leaders have had enough.

“Criticism is one thing,” Mayor Jane Dawkins is reported as saying at this month’s commissioner meeting by the Chattanooga Times Free Press. “Out-and-out lies and untruths — that’s another thing. Those kinds of things are the things that will be directed.”

Real estate: Social media a game changer

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/real-estate-social-media-a-game-changer/

Social media is a major part of the marketing plan for real estate agent Rich Tyson of Realty USA in Greece. Each day, he sets aside time to promote his business and his clients’ homes on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“When they see activity, they associate success,” says Tyson, 32.

Realtors such as Tyson say engaging people through social media is an effective way to market their brand. It’s also an additional tool to reach potential customers who may share their listings.

Tyson started in the real estate industry two years ago and had to build his business from the ground up. This year, he will record $4 million in sales. He credits social media for much of his success.

The Interview social media accounts shut down

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-interview-social-media-accounts-shut-down/

The Facebook and Twitter accounts for The Interview have been shut down.

Sony Pictures decided to cancel the release of The Interview this month after hackers threatened to attack cinemas showing the film.

Now the studio seems to have closed the social media accounts for the Seth Rogen comedy. Neither the Facebook or Twitter pages are currently inaccessible.

The Interview starred Rogen and James Franco as two civilians recruited by the CIA to assassinate Kim Jong-un.

A spokesman for Sony said at the time that they were ‘deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie.’

In protest, Secret Cinema are hosting screenings of an unknown film today in London, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Rome.

Wedgies.com Raises $700K For Its Social Media Polling Tools

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/wedgies-com-raises-700k-for-its-social-media-polling-tools/

Polling startup Wedgies.com (yes, that’s really its name) is announcing that it has raised $700,000 in seed funding led by Greycroft Partners.

Co-founder and CEO Porter Haney told me the company’s goal is to “legitimize web voting,” and its approach is to bring those polls to social media: “Think about what Gallup or SurveyMonkey would look like if they were starting today.”

For example, the company says The Wall Street Journal used Wedgies to poll readers about things like how many cell phones they use and their response to a speech by President Obama.

The Season for Social-Media Self-Loathing

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-season-for-social-media-self-loathing/

One of the funniest items to wash up on the shores of my social-media beaches over the last week was the case of Bridget and her hostile Christmas cards. “Bridget,” one of four sisters, used to appear regularly on her parents’ traditional holiday card — well into adulthood. But then, according to the accounts I read, her siblings got married, had children, and began producing offspring — and Christmas cards — of their own. Still single, Bridget became a holiday-card exile

Commuters urged to post 'safies' with taxi driver

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/commuters-urged-to-post-safies-with-taxi-driver/

MANILA, Philippines – Commuters are encouraged to take their “selfies” with taxi drivers for safety purposes.

Youth group Y&R urged commuters to post pictures with taxi drivers on social networking sites immediately after boarding with the hashtag #safie and the taxi’s license plate number.

Using the hashtag would help identify abusive taxi drivers, as well as to share good experiences of commuting, Y&R Philippines Executive Creative Director Herbert Hernandez said.

The youth group is working with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to promote the “safie” campaign.

The word “safie” is a combination of the words “safe” and “selfie.”

PNP spokesperson Gen. Wilben Mayor said that posting selfies online would assist the police force in investigating and identifying erring drivers.

BlackStar Technologies has released its Universal Social Networking Mobile application, Bablr to one of the largest smartphone user markets in the world, China.

The Company has entered into a joint development with a Chinese based technology and marketing group to develop and market a Chinese language version of ”Bablr” its mobile universal social-networking platform.

Founder, Ted Flowers said, “We cannot ignore the growing power of the Chinese consumer market and their desire to communicate and be connected to the world via social networking.”

The Year-In-Marketing: Which 2014 Predictions Came True?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-year-in-marketing-which-2014-predictions-came-true/

We have seen some game changers and new players in the digital marketing landscape this year: marketers finally fair-welled organic reach on Facebook, and paid social has turned into a necessity for brands. Those that predicted image-centric social networks would take off were on the money (see: Pinterest, Instagram), and short-form visual storytelling platforms like Twitter’s Vine and Instagram have proved to be immensely popular for brands looking to connect with younger audiences.

Social Media For Facility Management | Today's Facility Manager (TFM) Magazine

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-media-for-facility-management-todays-facility-manager-tfm-magazine/

acilities managers (fms) in the current era of social media ascendancy must think outside the building and become executive liaisons not just in matters regarding their facilities, but also in the very business conducted inside and outside of them. Customers and employees are using social media to interact with public spaces, and fms are using it to engage new customers, network with employees, and enhance operations.

Since it is so critical, fms should know as much as possible about and consider enlisting social media tools like Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter, and YouTube.

Case for the The Social Media Executive

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/case-for-the-the-social-media-executive/

This topic is one that is hotly debated over and over. Many articles I have read over the past few years suggest that all companies should share in the responsibility for sending out communications to people on behalf of their client. Some companies achieve this through shared access through a company profile on different social media platforms. Other companies insist that employees have their own profiles and use their best judgement or formal policies to insure they are meeting proper company protocol when communicating with others.

High schoolers wise up about social media when applying for colleges

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/high-schoolers-wise-up-about-social-media-when-applying-for-colleges/

High schoolers are increasingly aware that those embarrassing Facebook posts or tweets could cost them a shot at getting into their dream college.

The test prep company Kaplan found that only 16 percent of the 403 colleges surveyed found anything troubling in the social media posts they viewed — a drop from 50 percent a year ago. That decline comes as the survey found more colleges are factoring social media into the application process: 35 percent in the latest survey compared to only 9 percent six years ago.
