Starz filmmaking competition ‘The Chair’ torpedoed by social media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/starz-filmmaking-competition-the-chair-torpedoed-by-social-media/

“The Chair” — a new docu-series from cable network Starz — invites two first-time directors to make two entirely different movies from the same script. And with voting now open to determine which director will win the $250,000 prize promised by the competitive reality TV show, it’s becoming apparent that the competition between Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci isn’t about filmmaking after all.

CHENNAI: When 27-year-old K Subramani* was asked to produced evidence in the family court to validate his claim that his wife was “immoral”, he flashed a pixilated photo of a young woman in a sleeveless shirt and jeans with another man in the background. It was a photo dating to his wife’s college days that was put up on Facebook by her friend.

The lawyers and the judge weren’t surprised. Over the last one year, family courts have seen a sharp increase in couples presenting “evidence” from social networking sites to seek divorce.

Why Google Plus Ads Could Be The Best New Paid Social Tool [Infographic]

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/why-google-plus-ads-could-be-the-best-new-paid-social-tool-infographic/

Google Plus is one of the last social networks to offer Promoted Posts, but their +Post ads could end up being the most effective in today’s saturated content market.

Unlike other social ads, promoting your content through +Post ads will display your ads across the Google Display Ad network (commonly known as Adsense). This means that instead of littering Google Plus with ads, the +Post ads are located on third party websites that already utilize Google Adsense.

Despite Facebook’s large membership base, your ads are limited to that platform’s audience. On the other hand, Google Plus ads can potentially be seen by an unlimited number of people

Thousands Denounce HSBC Board Member's Likening of Hong Kong People to Freed Slaves

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/thousands-denounce-hsbc-board-members-likening-of-hong-kong-people-to-freed-slaves/

Thousands have signed an online petition denouncing reported comments by an HSBC Holdings board member in which she likened Hong Kong protesters’ demands for democracy to the emancipation of slaves.

Laura Cha, who is also a member of Hong Kong’s policy-making Executive Council, chairwoman of the city’s Financial Services Development Council and a member of China’s parliament, was quoted as making the comments at an event in Paris.

“American slaves were liberated in 1861 but did not get voting rights until 107 years later, so why can’t Hong Kong wait for a while?” the Standard newspaper on Thursday quoted Cha as saying, referring to demands for free elections in the former British colony.

Facebook, VKontakte Partially Blocked In Tajikistan

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/facebook-vkontakte-partially-blocked-in-tajikistan/

Facebook and other social media have been partially blocked in Tajikistan for the third time this month.

Internet users in Tajikistan say that Facebook, as well as local news portal Topnews.tj, and Russia’s VKontakte social network and Yandex search engine, stopped being accessible via several Internet providers on October 30.

The reason for the blockage is not known.

In the past few years, Tajik authorities have occasionally blocked access to news and social media websites, including RFE/RL’s Tajik Service and Facebook, but later unblocked them.

Here's Why Everyone Wants To Be Social Selling

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/heres-why-everyone-wants-to-be-social-selling/

Social selling is the big thing.

Get on social networks, connect with the right people and sell yourself, your products and achieve success.

But is it really any different to the normal sales process?

The really good sales people always started with good networking skills. They have the gift of finding, talking to and getting close to the people who can help them.

Mike Derezin, vice president of Sales Solutions at LinkedIn, believes social media has fundamentally changed the way buying and selling happens.

“It’s been happening on LinkedIn, this notion of social selling, since LinkedIn launched over 10 years ago,” he told Business Insider.

“Now I think it is coming to a place where it is becoming more mainstream.

“We’re seeing a critical mass of buyers. LinkedIn has over 313 million members and here in Australia we have over 6 million members. That’s north of 80% of Australian professionals

Lee Cottle, Director, VP Global Head of Sales, Push Technology: The number one mistake that many brands make when it comes to social app development is that they don’t incorporate a data management strategy, thereby sacrificing on performance.
Consumers today have high expectations for apps, and the majority won’t tolerate slow load times. Thus, the best social apps are the ones that ensure great performance for users, in spite of all the data that must be loaded each time they open or update.

Amman, October 31 (Petra) – The United Nations (UN) has launched the first social media platform dedicated to peace.

The international organization said in a press release on Friday that the number of social media websites found on the Internet today is uncountable, yet there is no single site exclusively dedicated to promoting the culture of peace.

“With newsfeeds filled with conflicts, terrorism, and political problems, it’s clear that peace needs a digital home,” the UN said.

This was the driving force behind “Civic Peace Corps”, a new social media platform created to enable people to interact, share and network for peace.

Comment: How social media fools us into revealing more than we intend to

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/comment-how-social-media-fools-us-into-revealing-more-than-we-intend-to/

By David Brake

Hardly a day goes by without a story in the news about politicians, celebrities or ordinary members of the public revealing embarrassing or discrediting details about themselves and those around them online. On a smaller scale, we also see this happening among our friends, family and co-workers, as images or comments are seen by people for whom they were never intended or misinterpreted and taken out of context. Many see this as nothing more than a source of occasional entertainment. Those who seemingly inadvertently wash their dirty linen in public are often painted as either technologically clueless (if older) or, if they are younger, attention seekers with no sense of privacy.

Is This the Troll-Proof Social Network of Women’s Dreams?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/is-this-the-troll-proof-social-network-of-womens-dreams/

Sometimes the internet feels cleanly divided into two parts. There’s the anonymous internet, filled with infinitely replicating 15-year-old boys eager to test boundaries with violent rape jokes — think Gamergate, 4chan, Reddit. Then there’s the not-anonymous internet, which contains your mom, your boss, your ex-boyfriend, your next boyfriend — where you worry about your Google results, and self-censor accordingly. Gone, it seems, is the small, pseudonymous internet — best exemplified for women my age by LiveJournal — where you could express yourself without the surveillance of authority figures, but still forge real connections with other real people and potential future IRL friends.

Taylor Swift Is the Reigning Queen of Celebrity Social-Media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/taylor-swift-is-the-reigning-queen-of-celebrity-social-media/

“I cyber-stalk because I care,” Taylor Swift tweeted Monday, with the hashtag #taylurking at the end. For the uninitiated, taylurking is a play on lurking, which means to spy on people online without them realizing; in Taylor’s case, it meant she was pulling photos of fans posing with her new album at Target and then posting them to Twitter. If you are over the age of 25 and sort of creeped out by this behavior, don’t worry; her fans loved this, as she knew they would, because Taylor Swift is really, really good at social media. She treats her fans like friends, speaks their language, plays their games — all while encouraging their documentation of her album purchase. It is social media marketing extended to the hyper teenage BFF extreme. And it’s totally working.

LinkedIn, Groupon Reporting During Social Media Stock Storm

LinkedIn and Groupon GRPN -0.35% are due to report results after the bell Thursday during what has been a brutal week for social media stocks.

Twitter TWTR -1.05% reported earnings Monday after the close and showed a slowdown in user growth. That was enough to make the stock reel. Twitter’s stock is down more than 15% since it reported third-quarter results.

Meanwhile, Facebook FB -2.48% managed to spook investors when it reported earnings Tuesday for another reason: spending. The social networking site said it plans to ramp up spending in 2015. Mark Zuckerberg on a conference call said the company plans to invest “aggressively.”

Shares of Facebook are down 9% since the company reported earnings Tuesday.

Investors in LinkedIn appear to be pessimistic Thursday ahead of earnings as the stock is down more than 1%. Groupon’s stock is up slightly.

Unmanned Antares rocket explodes on launch

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/unmanned-antares-rocket-explodes-on-launch/

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – An unmanned commercial rocket headed for the International Space Station to deliver supplies exploded just after launching Tuesday, filling the sky with a massive fireball.

The Antares rocket supplied by contractor Orbital Sciences blew up six seconds after liftoff at NASA’s space launch facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the space agency said.

The explosion destroyed the rocket and spacecraft and immediately raised questions about the future of NASA’s reliance on private commercial ventures to carry vital payloads into space to supply and support the orbiting space station.

NASA and Orbital Sciences were gathering data to determine the cause of the failure of the Orbital CRS-3, the space agency said. No injuries were reported.

“There has been a vehicle anomaly,” Orbital Sciences, the contractor supplying the rocket, said on its Twitter feed. It added later in a statement, “The vehicle suffered a catastrophic failure.”

Social media: Friend or foe?

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/social-media-friend-or-foe/

I remember the spring of 2005 when Facebook was all the buzz. I was a high school senior, all my friends had been accepted to college, and we all received an official email address from the four-year institutions of our choosing. The first thing we did with that email address was to create a Facebook account. Move aside Myspace, all the cool college kids who wanted to be noticed were on Facebook. Soon, Facebook started letting anyone with a verifiable email address create an account.,

How to Use Social Media to Impress Recruiters

In light of research released from Jobvite regarding how employers are using social media tools to source and hire candidates, I thought it would be helpful to provide ideas and insight about how to use the data from the survey directly from a recruiter. Jackie Hydock is Director, Global Recruiting at App Annie. The organization taps social media tools to recruit, and she made the following suggestions regarding how job seekers can use social media effectively:

How to Leverage Live Marketing With Social Media Before, During and After Events

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-to-leverage-live-marketing-with-social-media-before-during-and-after-events/

Social media and event marketing have two things in common: they are effective, intimate and high-impact ways to reach consumers, with the potential to create long-lasting and meaningful relationships.

Several brands are successfully merging the physical nature of live experiences with the social media world. In a recent white paper, Legacy Marketing Partners says “it’s up to brand marketers to create compelling brand experiences that blend the two realities as seamlessly as the targets they’re trying to reach.

ISIS Shifts Its Social-Media Patterns

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/isis-shifts-its-social-media-patterns/

The latest round of propaganda videos released by the Islamic State suggest the terrorist group is altering its media approach to directly counter what the mainstream Western media is saying about it.

The two most recently released videos both feature British hostage John Cantlie, a captive journalist who has been used by ISIS as a spokesperson of sorts during the last month of his captivity. The first was the latest release of a propaganda video series called “Lend Me Your Ears.”

In the most recent installment of this series, Cantlie reads a script that directly addresses a number of details reported by The New York Times in their Sunday cover story, “The Horror Before the Beheadings,” as well as older news stories.

Marijuana ban to have rare hearing in federal court

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/marijuana-ban-to-have-rare-hearing-in-federal-court/

Marijuana users and growers usually try to stay out of federal courts, which strictly enforce the nationwide laws against the drug and have rebuffed challenges to the government’s classification of pot as one of the most dangerous narcotics.

But that could change this week when a federal judge in Sacramento, in a criminal case against seven men charged with growing marijuana on national forest land in Trinity and Tehama counties, hears what she has described as “new scientific and medical information” that raises questions about the validity of the federal ban.

But when the cast of Jason Reitman’s drama “Men, Women & Children” gathered at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, the promotional event took on an edgier tone.

PBA Ethics Committee Issues Social Media Guidance

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/pba-ethics-committee-issues-social-media-guidance/

Consider the following facts. A man received an $80,000 confidential settlement for his age-discrimination claim against his former employer. However, he forfeited that settlement after his daughter posted on her Facebook page that “Mama and Papa Snay won the case against Gulliver. Gulliver is now officially paying for my vacation to Europe this summer. SUCK IT.” Because this Facebook post violated a confidential settlement agreement, it cost the plaintiff the full settlement.

In another case, the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board suspended an attorney for five years for instructing his client to delete certain damaging photographs from his Facebook account, withholding the photographs from opposing counsel, and withholding from the trial court the emails discussing the plan to delete the information from the client’s Facebook page. In addition, the trial court imposed $722,000 in sanctions ($542,000 upon the lawyer and $180,000 upon his client) to compensate opposing counsel for their legal fees.

Manitoba syphillis outbreak driven by social media hook-ups

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/manitoba-syphillis-outbreak-driven-by-social-media-hook-ups/

Social media is still fuelling the largest outbreak of syphilis in Winnipeg in recent years.

Dr. Joss Reimer, medical officer of health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, said 60 cases have been reported in Winnipeg so far this year. The majority are diagnosed in men who are having sex with men.

“The numbers are the highest we have seen since our current method of keeping record [was adopted]. We have numbers back to 1991 and we don’t have any other years close to this year,” she said.

“We had outbreaks in 2003 and again in 2007, but this outbreak is quite a bit larger.”

Saudi Lawyers Jailed, Banned From Social Media Over Tweets

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/saudi-lawyers-jailed-banned-from-social-media-over-tweets/

Three lawyers in Saudi Arabia were jailed Monday for up to eight years and banned from using social media over tweets that undermined the judiciary, the official news agency SPA said.

The lawyers were convicted, among other charges, of “disobeying the ruler” as well as undermining and slandering the judicial system which they described as “retarded,” it said.

They used “tweets on social media” to carry out the offences, said SPA.

“All this is to undermine public order,” the agency reported, without identifying the accused or giving further details about what they wrote.

The court sentenced one accused to eight years in prison, while the other two were handed five-year terms.

The Future of Social Media: Paid vs. Organic

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/the-future-of-social-media-paid-vs-organic/

The future of social media is in paid content, which requires a different strategy than organic. How can you prepare?

Social media started as an organic marketing tool with an emphasis on creating engaging and interesting content that people actually liked. Over the past three to five years, paid (or sponsored) content has become a staple of most social media marketing efforts. While Facebook has been the clear leader in driving paid social media content by actively reducing the exposure of organic content, most other social networks are testing paid content (including newer networks like Pinterest and Instagram).

“Public by default” is the future of professional communication

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/public-by-default-is-the-future-of-professional-communication/

In snail mail and phone calls, we expect a certain amount of privacy: we suppose that only we and our recipients are aware of the communication, or at least of the meaningful content of the information exchanged. Those technologies were built to allow exactly two people to communicate. The idea of unintended individuals snooping on our business, as mundane as it can be, is repulsive.

As soon as we want to share information more broadly or collaborate with an extended team, though, things get very complicated, very fast. For example, Today, we have to use third-party companies, with dedicated phone numbers and passwords, to make a three-person conference call. Clearly, telephony’s standards were designed around one-to-one communication.

How to do selfie-powered marketing

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/how-to-do-selfie-powered-marketing/

Marketing to women seems so easy, the way Erika Geraerts tells it. Women like taking selfies, right? They love talking to each other on social media, yes? And word of mouth is the best form of advertising you can have.

So when you have an idea for a product – say, body scrub made from leftover coffee grinds and a bit of oil – what better way to get it out there than have your potential customers sell it for you?

Geraerts, 25, and her partners – Bree Johnson, 27, and Jess Hatzis, 28 – smeared some of their frank body coffee scrub over themselves, took photos and flicked them out on to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — At Equinix’s SV5 data center here, it’s easy to feel like you’ve entered the Matrix.

Once you get past the security guards, the biometric reader and the man trap double entryway, you find yourself in a massive, windowless room bigger than a football field. It’s dark. Dim, blue lighting reveals long corridors lined with locked cages. Inside the cages are racks filled with computer hardware — servers and routers — their LED lights blinking hypnotically.

Overhead, above the corridors, are yellow plastic trays carrying multicolored fiber optic cable. Cooling air blasts from the 30-foot ceiling. The computer equipment and cooling system combine to create an unearthly high-decibel hum.

More turmoil for user privacy in social media

http://socialnetworkingnews.org/more-turmoil-for-user-privacy-in-social-media/

Few debates rage more fiercely in the social media world than the one around user privacy. While that subject is obviously fraught on a larger scale, companies in the social network sphere are some of the first to be cited for lacking privacy standards. Facebook receives ongoing flack for its sub-par privacy parameters, which, granted, the company has worked to change over the years. Recently, Snapchat — the “disappearing photo” application — has come under fire for misleading users as to how their data is stored, and for user photos leaking to other sources (although the company affirms that the leaks have been a product of third-party app usage).

Gerber spoke to about 1,000 moms with children under the age of 2.

Motivations were varied. Some parents decided to dedicate an account to their child so they could maintain their own sense of identity.

Why Being Human on Social Media Is the Best Strategy You'll Ever Have

In search of faster growth, more engagement and that elusive return on engagement, you’ve tried tactic after tactic and tool after tool but it’s just not working the way you’d hoped.

Tactics can be great. And tools can save you time. But if you lose sight of this one simple principle, it’ll be all for naught: Social media at its core is social. It’s about real relationships with real people.
