Boyle: Reasons for police video recording shaky at best

Smile, you’re on not-so-candid camera.

I’ve watched with amusement as City of Asheville officials, police leaders and some politicians have tried to justify the Police Department’s not-so-formal, somewhat contradictory policy of taping public events and then holding on to the tapes for, well, ever.

The police department has a filing cabinet chock-full of recordings dating back a decade and ranging — as far as anyone knows — from a gun rights rally to Occupy Asheville events to tea party tax day protests.

No one knows for sure because they have no listing of what they’ve recorded, won’t say what they’ve recorded and won’t let the media see any of them, including a tape from a recent Mountain Moral Monday rally that drew 5,000 people, as a recent, excellent story by my colleague Jon Ostendorff pointed out
