The Catholic church has always used whatever means of communication available to spread the Gospel, said Matt Kerr, a spokesman for the Diocese of Allentown.

“Back in the day it was word of mouth,” he said.

From there came printed materials such as books, and then newspapers like those published by area dioceses beginning in the 1800s.

And now? The centuries-old institution doesn’t only rely on word of mouth or print — it employs podcasts, Twitter updates and social networking.

A long way from those early days, yes, but the Catholic church — like other nonprofit organizations — needs to use new methods to stay connected with those it serves, Kerr said.
