According to The Economic Times, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) plans to launch its own mobile messaging app to rival Facebook’s (NASDAQ:FB) WhatsApp. The paper reported that GOOG plans to test the app in India and other emerging markets before launching it in 2015. Similar to WhatsApp, the app will not force users to use a Google login and will be free to use whereas WhatsApp charges the user $1/year after one year. Nikhyl Singhal, GOOG’s top product manager, is responsible for the platform development and is a director for Google Hangout and Google Plus. He has been traveling around emerging markets to understand the local ecosystem since GOOG’s messaging app will be localized to cater to the preference of this different market.
